Work and fun
It's been a busy summer for me. I've been reading a ton of books for my library summer reading program, as well as enjoying a new Kindle Fire! In fact, I'm using it right now to blog, since my laptop's hard drive died. I didn't want to wait until I got it fixed before getting back to genealogy blogging, especially now that I'm taking the leap and combining my hobby with my professional life for the first time. Yup, I'm going to do a genealogy program for kids! I spent a good chunk of time at work today prepping; it was a nice way to spend my Saturday morning. I've always loved the process of planning a library program just as much as the actual presentation of it.
My program is for kids aged nine to twelve. I'm planning to show a PowerPoint presentation that covers genealogy basics such as how to interview your relatives, what websites are out there to use for research, and what you can expect to find on those sites. I also want them to do some fun hands on activities like filling out a simple family tree, finding out the meaning of their surnames, and looking up historical events that occurred on their date of birth.
I'm both excited and a little nervous about doing this program. I hope enough kids sign up, and I hope I can show them that genealogy is fun. I have just under two weeks until the program; I'll do a write-up here afterwards and talk about how it went. Wish me luck!
