Mary made cigars
My great-grandmother Mary Wesolowski was a cigar maker in Detroit. The tobacco industry in Detroit was almost all women employees throughout the late nineteenth century through the 1920's. Mary was listed as a cigar maker in several of the Detroit city directories and also in her marriage record (she married Frank Lehmann in 1905).
The earliest city directory I found her in was 1904. She would have been about 17 or 18 years old at that time. I wonder if she was making cigars before that?
Based on Mary's addresses, chances are good that she worked for the San Telmo Cigar Manufacturing Company at Forest and Dequindre in Detroit.
