The first family history trip of 2016

Jason and I spent the afternoon in Windsor; we hung out at Caesar's and then had an early (and delicious) dinner at Bubi's Awesome Eats. Before going home, we drove past the house that my great-grandma Viola lived in when she was 17 years old, way back in 1911.



The house is for sale and no one's living there right now, which is good, otherwise I would have felt like a total creeper taking this picture. Ha!

It's been a very long time since I posted here. I've been taking breaks from research because I keep running into brick walls. I even let my Ancestry membership lapse since I felt like I shouldn't be paying the money when I wasn't logging in regularly. But something about springtime always makes me want to dive back in to genealogy. Maybe it's because spring is a time of year when I feel more energized and motivated in general. Or maybe as the trees begin to bud and the flowers start to bloom, I'm reminded of the cycles of life and how my own family history is a part of that larger picture, and I feel a renewed sense of connection to my ancestors, their lives, and their experiences. Eliza, George, Alzina, William

My favorite Michigan genealogy website, seekingmichigan.org, has just added more death certificate images - woohoo! I immediately started searching for any ancestors who may have died between 1921 and 1947 hoping to strike genealogy gold. And strike I did, in the form of my great-great-great grandmother Eliza Rich. To break it down: Eliza was the mother of Ida, my great-great-grandmother Ida was the mother of Viola, my great-grandmother Viola was the mother of Doris, my grandmother Doris was the mother of Janice, my mother. Eliza has interested me for some time. Years ago, I saw a picture of her in a photo album that used to belong to my grandmother. After she passed, my mom kept the photo album. It was a blurry picture taken outdoors; Eliza was standing in profile, looking off into the distance.
